AG show up yet?
There was a long pause, and she was about to turn off her phone again, when her brother responded.
No. Where r u?
She couldn’t tell him, so she avoided his question.
Safe, but can’t talk, will call later.
Turning off her phone was difficult when she would have given anything to see her brother. Or at least talk to him, hear the sound of his voice. Being isolated like this, away from her family, was horrible.
But temporary. Something she needed to remember. Something to hold on to.
“Ready?” Logan asked, straightening from the computer. She belatedly realized he was in the process of shutting down the machine.
“Yes.” She ignored her emotional and physical exhaustion. “Are you bringing the computer along?”
“Bring everything. We’ll be exchanging vehicles.”
“Which means we’ll need to find a new place to stay.” It shouldn’t matter, but this constant changing of motel rooms was wearing on her.
“Afraid so.” Logan slung the computer case over his shoulder and held open the door. “Don’t worry. We’ll find something just as convenient.”
She nodded and followed him outside. “How about we eat at that Mexican place we passed on the way here?”
He grinned. “Why not? Mexican it is.”

Kate sat back in her chair with a groan. “I should have stopped at two burritos,” she moaned.
He chuckled and pushed away his plate. “I’m stuffed, too. But I’m afraid we need to get going.”
“I’m ready when you are.”
The waitress came at Logan’s signal and handed them the bill. She winced when she saw Logan’s dwindling amount of cash. “Do we have enough?”
“We’re fine.” He tossed down the bills and stood. “Come on, let’s hit the road.”
The drive to Maplesville Park took a good hour and a half. But they still had almost another hour before their scheduled meeting. Dark clouds swirled in the sky, and she watched them warily, hoping the rain would hold off until after they had their new vehicle and more cash.
Logan insisted on parking far away and walking in from the south. Since she hadn’t studied the map the way he had, she didn’t argue. As they walked along the sidewalks, she noticed that there weren’t many people around. She saw one jogger, heading past them as if on the way home, and a couple kids on Rollerblade skates.
She pulled together her hoodie, as the temperature had dropped. A storm threatened. They walked past the bronze statue of Louis Armstrong, the famous jazz musician, to make their way through the rest of the park.
There was nothing remotely suspicious anywhere, but she was still tense, unable to get rid of the strange sense of heightened awareness.
“Let’s sit here for a moment,” Logan said, interrupting her thoughts as he gestured to a park bench. “And then I’d like you to go back and wait for me in the car.”
“No way.” She glared at him. “If you don’t want your boss to see me, I’ll hide. There was a good-sized tree not far from the statue. I’ll keep watch for anything out of the ordinary.
